바울은 이사야 29:10절의 말씀을 여기서 인용한다. “대저 여호와께서 깊이 잠들게 하는 신을 너희에게 부어주사 너희의 눈을 감기셨음이니 눈은 선지자요 너희를 덮으셨음이니 머리는 선견자라”(사 29:10). 이스라엘이 하나님을 거역하자 하나님께서는 그들을 그냥 내버려 두었던 것이 아니라 좀더 적극적으로 행동을 취하셨다.
하나님께서는 유대 민족에게 혼미한 영을 주셔서 깊은 잠에 빠지게 하셨고 눈으로 보고 귀로 듣는 능력을 뺏앗아 버리셨던 것이다. 가진자에게는 더 많은 것을 주시고 갖지 않은 자에게는 있는 것마저 빼앗으시는 분이 하나님이시다.
신명기 29:2-4
2 모세가 온 이스라엘을 소집하고 그들에게 이르되 여호와께서 애굽 땅에서 너희 목전에 바로와 그 모든 신하와 그 온 땅에 행하신 모든 일을 너희가 보았나니
3 곧 그 큰 시험과 이적과 큰 기사를 네가 목도하였느니라
4 그러나 깨닫는 마음과 보는 눈과 듣는 귀는 오늘날까지 여호와께서 너희에게 주지 아니하셨느니라
2.Moses summoned all the Israelites and said to them: Your eyes have seen all that the LORD did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials and to all his land.
3.With your own eyes you saw those great trials, those miraculous signs and great wonders.
4.But to this day the LORD has not given you a mind that understands or eyes that see or ears that hear.
이사야 29:10
10 대저 여호와께서 깊이 잠들게 하는 신을 너희에게 부어주사 너희의 눈을 감기셨음이니 눈은 선지자요 너희를 덮으셨음이니 머리는 선견자라
10.The LORD has brought over you a deep sleep: He has sealed your eyes (the prophets); he has covered your heads (the seers).
에스겔 12:2
2 인자야 ! 네가 패역한 족속 중에 거하도다 그들은 볼 눈이 있어도 보지 아니하고 들을 귀가 있어도 듣지 아니하나니 그들은 패역한 족속임이니라
2."Son of man, you are living among a rebellious people. They have eyes to see but do not see and ears to hear but do not hear, for they are a rebellious people.
에베소서 4:17,18
17 그러므로 내가 이것을 말하며 주 안에서 증거하노니 이제부터는 이방인이 그 마음의 허망한 것으로 행함같이 너희는 행하지 말라
18 저희 총명이 어두워지고 저희 가운데 있는 무지함과 저희 마음이 굳어짐으로 말미암아 하나님의 생명에서 떠나 있도다
17.So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.
18.They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.

다윗의 이 말은 엘리야가 이스라엘에 대하여 하나님께 드렸던 중보 이상으로 이스라엘에 대하여 더 지독하게 대적하는 내용이었다.
시편 69:21-23
21 저희가 쓸개를 나의 식물로 주며 갈할 때에 초로 마시웠사오니
22 저희 앞에 밥상이 올무가 되게 하시며 저희 평안이 덫이 되게 하소서
23 저희 눈이 어두워 보지 못하게 하시며 그 허리가 항상 떨리게 하소서
21.They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.
22.May the table set before them become a snare; may it become retribution and a trap.
23.May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever.
또한 바울이 로마에 갔을 때 유대인 지도층 인사들을 만나 자기가 로마에 간 연유를 설명하면서 유대인들일 자기를 붙잡아 로마인들 손에 넘겨줄 때 다음과 같이 말했다.
사도행전 28:25-28
25 서로 맞지 아니하여 흩어질 때에 바울이 한 말로 일러 가로되 성령이 선지자 이사야로 너희 조상들에게 말씀하신 것이 옳도다
26 일렀으되 이 백성에게 가서 말하기를 너희가 듣기는 들어도 도무지 깨닫지 못하며 보기는 보아도 도무지 알지 못하는도다
27 이 백성들의 마음이 완악하여져서 그 귀로는 둔하게 듣고 그 눈을 감았으니 이는 눈으로 보고 귀로 듣고 마음으로 깨달아 돌아와 나의 고침을 받을까 함이라 하였으니
28 그런즉 하나님의 이 구원을 이방인에게로 보내신 줄 알라 저희는 또한 들으리라 하더라
25.They disagreed among themselves and began to leave after Paul had made this final statement: "The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your forefathers when he said through Isaiah the prophet:
26."'Go to this people and say, "You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
you will be ever seeing but never perceiving."
27.For this people's heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears,
and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.'
28."Therefore I want you to know that God's salvation has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will listen!"
